Officials confirm mother of late rapper Tupac Shakur dies at age 69. Marin County Sheriff officials confirmed Afeni Shakur’s death on Twitter. She was was a former member of the Black Panthers and a civil rights activist. Shakur also oversaw her son’s unreleased material.#AfeniShakur.
Deputies responded to a report of possible cardiac arrest at 9:34 p.m. at Afeni’s home in Sausalto, the sheriff’s office said. She was taken to a local hospital, where she died at 10:28 p.m, the Atlanta Journal Constitution reports. No other details were provided.
Born Alice Faye Williams, Shakur changed her name as an adult when she became politically active and joined the Black Panther movement. She was pregnant with Tupac in 1971 and incarcerated while she and other Panthers faced conspiracy charges that were later dismissed.
Afeni Shakur was pivotal in her son’s music career and oversaw his musical catalog and legacy after his death. She was the subject of Tupac Shakur’s 1995 hit “Dear Mama.”
